Embu Gets The 1st Coffee Miller

Embu to Export 1st coffee under certificate of origin.


The Embu County Coffee Mill was started by the 24 coffee co-operatives in the county with a purpose of jointly processing their coffee at a centralized area. They formed a co-operative by the name of Embu County Coffee Mill Cooperative Society Limited, which is run by a nine-member board drawn from the chairs of these co-operatives.
The membership of the mill is through shareholding where each society was to contribute Ksh3.8m.

At the moment the loan was acquired from commodities funds stands at Ksh126,403,561.67M (One hundred and twenty six million, four hundred and three thousand, five hundred and sixty one and sixty seven cents) as at 18 April 2019 and the interest is still accumulating.

How loan was secured

1. All the 24 societies signed the committal letters to pay each Ksh3,852,000 i.e. Ksh. 91.5M

2. Embu district Coop Union land No. Embu municipality/530 was offered as collateral.

Devolution

The County of Embu Government so far has supported the union with Ksh38.0Milion in form of:-

1. Construction of the perimeter wall​​​​​​.
2. Construction of the husk house.
3. Construction of the store​​​​​​​.
4. Landscaping and stone pitching​​​​​​.
5. Plastering of perimeter wall terrazzo and pallets for the store.
6. Electrical works and CCTV cameras​​​​​​.
7. Repainting and the terrazzo of the main factory building​​​.
8. Cabro blocks paving​​​​​​​​​.

Support

County Government has assisted the mill with the following:

1. Supported the society in setting up the professional mill operating structures.
2. Sponsored various benchmarking trips to Machakos and Nyeri coffee mills among others for the society to learn on how to successfully run and govern a coffee mill.
3. Assisted society with testing machines which have been laying idle and not tested in 5 years, the exercise is ongoing.
4. Bought the society a 3 phase 315 KVAS power transformer.
5. Facilitated the society to get a milling license.
